The Best Work
This Punk is inspired by CryptoPunk #5974 and artworks of Malevich. This work is an emanation of Leo Tolstoy's work and biography presented in the form of a painting. We wanted here to enhance, as much as possible, the degree of symbolism of the figures and colors. Therefore, it turned out that each element has its purpose and meaning. The way of depiction, colors and figures were borrowed from Malevich's style not by accident. The fact is that the themes of the works of Tolstoy and Malevich overlap: they were both interested in the life of the peasants, their way of life and the fate of the common man in Russia.
Leo Tolstoy
Therefore, Punk itself is composed of simple and monotonous elements. This refers to the philosophy of Leo Tolstoy - Tolstoyism. It consisted in the rejection of luxury and wealth, the desire for simplicity in lifestyle, food (Tolstoy was a vegetarian), unity with nature and helping those around him. He was sure that money - the incarnation of evil, he did not need it at all, it would be a great difficulty for him to dispose of it. Leo Tolstoy himself throughout his life helped the poor and homeless.
Tolstoy with peasant children
When he was still at university he went to the most dangerous areas during the height of the typhus epidemic, where he provided the necessary assistance to the homeless. And in his elderly years, poor people would gather at his homestead under a huge elm tree and wait. Leo would give a small sum to each of them (provided that he himself did not live so richly, and his wife reproached him for giving his children less money than the poor). The same simplicity is displayed in Punk's clothing. If you look closely, you can see that his head resembles a shirt, loose to the bottom - this is the kind of clothes he most often wore. It was sewn for him by his wife. Such a shirt resembles the clothes of peasants who worked in the fields - it does not constrain the movements and is made of rough and cheap cloth, so you could not worry about its condition. By the way, Leo Tolstoy's choice of clothing is also not accidental - he promoted hard physical labor, and in his later years one could see him in the fields, doing the work of peasants.
Tolstoy telling a fairy tale to his grandchildren
The white color, however, does not signify ceremonial clothing, it is simply the unpainted material of the shirt. Punk's hat represents in its shape a boot. This is no coincidence at all. Leo Tolstoy in his spare time made boots (also simple, without luxury, peasant) and then gave them to his family and friends. After he had sewn off another pair, he said to his wife: "Here is my best work!" (this was after the great novels "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina" had been written!).
Flag of the Russian empire
But what is Punk himself dressed in? Why do we see orange, a color quite rich and luxurious, against such poor elements? The thing is that this is a piece of the flag of the Russian Empire, in which Punk seems to be wrapped. The country in which Tolstoy lived caused him much more evil than good. He went to war, where he saw all the horrors of war, witnessed the greedy and ruthless machine of bureaucracy, was excommunicated from the Orthodox Church, some of his books were banned, was repeatedly criticized by the government.
However, despite everything, he, having the opportunity to go to live abroad, did not do so, and lived all his life in his homeland, continuing to make the world around him better: he opened schools and hospitals for peasants, wrote an ABC book and many textbooks for children, was an advocate of peasants in court. So simply and humbly does this Punk bear responsibility for his homeland. He did not throw off the shackles of responsibility, but accepted his fate with dignity.
