Depression in Black
This Punk is inspired by CryptoPunk #9554 and artworks of Frank Stella. SupremePunk #077 depicts the artist’s idea of suicide and depression. The author was several times on the verge of committing suicide. He presented his vision of this state on the canvas. The technical execution of the Punk inspires the sense of instability and discomfort. This artwork was inspired by oeuvre of Franck Stella, American artist of post-painterly abstraction. His cycle of works with a grim name “black paintings”, which is distinguished by the original and unique style immediately highlighted the artist from other art representatives. The 50th ears have become a starting point for post-painterly abstraction in America. Chilling, free from standards and composite tasks abstraction was one of the styles opened by American artists in search of alternative painting of action. technical part of it.
E. Munk — The scream, 1893
The overall composition of the work and the solution of color spots creates a feeling of rejection of the central element of the picture. The viewer, from a psychological point of view, maps himself to the main character of the artwork, sharing his loneliness and instability. This technique we can meet on Edward Munk’s canvas “The Scream”. His picture was his inner impulse not only to convey the inner scream of himself, but the scream of the world, nature and humanity itself.
The theme of alienation and rejection of a person in society also subdued many kinetic artists, who created after World War II. The fate of many kinetic artists who lived in Latin America is extremely dramatic. In the beginning of 20th century, many of them fled with their families from Western Europe, escaping from danger, then in the World War II they escaped from Nazi persecution. In addition, that is why many of them, who started working in Brazil or Venezuela were obsessed by the idea of changing our world that survived the cruelty of the war. Their ideas connected with modernization human relationships and visual environment of humanity has largely determined the field of activity in which kinetic artists worked their entire life.
Photo from G. Goldschmidt's exhibitions
One of those creators is Gertrude Goldschmidt, Venezuela artist. She escaped from Western Europe to Latin America hiding from Nazi persecution. In 50thshe worked as an abstract painter. Her ideas connected with the rethinking the representation of fine art. For her not only two-dimensional narration on which you can draw makes sense. She created series of works without paper and art supplies. Her construction made with the use of archaic materials: the wires, rope and threads. They embody the fragility of the world that humanity has warmed after the end of the terrible war. The people who visited the exhibition of her kinetic masterpieces felt that they caught in the web of world, that they are weak and doomed. Same expression demonstrate the author of the Punk.

She landed in a tragic pose on the roof of Cadillac, which was parked next to the building. Robert made the only one famous photo in his life but it became the most popular in the 20th century. In 1964 American painter Andy Warhol made the artwork «Suicide» (the falling body) and devoted it to Evelyn. This iconic photography became reference to fashion layouts, album covers and music videos. Composition solution of the SupremePunk can be compared with the photo of Evelin McHale. The main color spot of the artwork reminds of hapless Evelin who cut herself out of the world.
