Spirit
This Punk was inspired by CryptoPunk #3456 and the paintings of Francis Bacon. This SupremePunk does not look solid, his facial features consist of regular geometric shapes that are separated from each other. It seems that the flesh of the Punk separates from the body and exposes the human soul. What is the inner world of a person? The author depicted it with the help of two parallelepipeds, striving upwards, breaking through the limits of the canvas — the viewer does not see the upper edges of these figures, they will probably never end. These pinkish-red parallelepipeds are surrounded by rectangles of different shades of red, and a dark purple ball hovers in front of them. He reminds the viewer of the philosophy of Pythagoras, according to which each element of Nature has its own musical key.
Ebenezer Sibly — Harmony of the spheres , harmony of the world, 1806
Pythagoras believed that everything around emits a sound that is not audible to people, since they were originally born in this incessant noise, which they take for silence. The planets were considered by the philosopher as the largest sources of sounds that formed a harmonious melody. Therefore, the depicted purple ball is the soul of a person, which, like a small planet with its own note, flows into the symphony orchestra of the Universe.
Francis Bacon — Head I Head III and Head IV, 1948
If we talk about the visual style of Punk, then you can notice the similarity of the painting with the pictorial language of Francis Bacon. This British artist created a series of paintings under the general title "Heads", the main feature of which was the wide-open mouths of the characters. Bacon considered the open mouth to be the most attractive part of the human face. On most of the artist's canvases, only he is distinguishable from all the facial features, often there is not even a full oval of the head. Of course, the mouth in this Punk attracts the viewer's attention last of all, but the vertical dominant in the figures used by the author coincides with the sharp vertically directed strokes of Francis Bacon. Although from an ideological point of view, these works are directly opposite. Bacon's bodies seem to be torn to pieces from the inside, unable to contain the pain and suffering soar upwards. Punk, on the other hand, voluntarily gets rid of the earthly shell, moving from a material state to a spiritual one.
Edwaert Collier — Still Life: The Smell, 1706
Intersecting figures and lines also create a sense of three-dimensional optical illusion, a tradition that began in the XVII century. Dutch artist Evert Collier created fake paintings (trompe-l'oeil paintings), where some object of the image seemed to go beyond the canvas and seemed real, not painted.
Oscar Reutersvärd — The Penrose triangle, 1980
More stylistically close to this SupremePunk works are found in Oscar Rutersvard. In 1934, he created the Penrose Triangle and subsequently specialized in depicting the so-called "impossible figures", becoming the founder of imp art.
Maurits Cornelis Escher — Waterfall, 1961
Maurits Cornelis Escher used the illusion of three-dimensional objects as a building material from which he created amazing lithographs. This Punk can also be regarded as an optical illusion, because upon careful examination it is noticeable that, for example, the head of a Punk consists of two separate figures, between which the background cavity is visible. It seems that if it were possible to rotate the image in different directions, the viewer would be able to find the angle from which the face of the Punk looked like a single whole. This once again underlines the idea that the SupremePunk itself is a removable shell from which the human soul, a piece of the Universe, comes out.
