SupremePunk #099
Elusive Imposition
This Punk is inspired by the CryptoPunk #1935 and works of Francias Picabia, a French and American artist, designer and illustrator. Picabia gained fame as an eccentric artist who does not obey any rules and stylistic dogmas in his work. He had a great influence on the art of surrealism and conceptualism, became one of the founders of Dadaism.
Francias Picabia — Ligustri, 1929
The SupremePunk is inspired by the painting by Francias Picabia "Ligustri", written for the series of works "Transparency". In this series, biblical and mythological plots, cool and warm shades are woven together, transparent layers, geometric shapes and lines intersect and overlap each other.
The painting "Ligustri" is a special one in this series, it was painted in 1929 under the influence of the cinematic experience of the artist from his 1924 short film "Intermission", which he wrote together with Rene Clair and Marcel Duchamp. In the "Intermission", the image is freed from the obligation to mean something, it is born really, has a concrete existence. Ligustri shows many references to Botticelli's works, especially the similarity in the elegance of female portraits is noticeable, flowers and leaves resemble the "Birth of Venus".
Punk repeats the theme of Picabia - the painting shows an elusive and changing image through the imposition of layers and the collision of warm and cold colors of the palette.
Alberto Giacometti — Man and Woman, 1927
The painting is static in its structure due to the square format of the painting and the general balance of lines and shapes. A similar paradox of static metamorphosis can be found in the works of Alberto Giacometti. Alberto Giacometti is one of the greatest master sculptors of the 20th century, a bright representative of the avant-garde. His famous sculpture "Composition" ("Man and Woman") is built using ribbed shapes, as if composed of parallel planes-slats. Despite the static nature of the sculpture, a sense of movement is created due to the rhythm of the details of the composition.
It can also be noted that the SupremePunk conveys the image of a person clearly inscribed in the framework, trying to overcome them. The black plane creates the feeling of the wings, which cover part of the work, hiding something from the viewer.
Mikhail Andrienko-Nechitailo — Man, 1970
A similar technique of theatricality in a cubic picture can be found in the work of Mikhail Andrienko-Nechitailo. In his painting "Man", composed of strict geometric figures occupies the entire space of the painting. It is monumental and visibly static, but at the same time there is a certain mysterious atmosphere, as if the figure performs its strange dance on stage in front of the audience.
SupremePunk shows a sense of harmony, using elements of cubism with archaic plasticity, while creating metamorphoses of space. The painting is painted in a pleasant color scheme, which does not distract from the central part of the composition, giving the viewer a more detailed insight into the image and planning of the work.
