Self-Portrait
This Punk is inspired by the CryptoPunk #3268 and the work of of Jean-Michel Basquiat. During his short life, Jean-Michel managed to become a pop icon and a neo-expressionist artist. He called himself a legend, was never interested in the words of art critics and claimed that "no one needs criticism to find out what art is."
Jean-Michel Basquiat — Self-Portrait, 1984
The inspiration for the painting was Basquiat's work "Self-Portrait". From the very beginning of his career, Basquiat counted on recognition on a par with the geniuses of the avant-garde. His "Self-portrait" of 1984 is proof of that: the painting puts Basquiat in the hallowed by a long tradition of a number of artists who asserted their right to independence from the customer and purely craft issues. I must say that Basquiat has achieved his goal: he is very often called "Black Picasso". On the "Self-Portrait", however, one does not feel confident that the search for fame is doomed to success: the artist carefully writes out his teeth, does not smile, but grins at the viewer. SupremePunk is based on the idea of a Basque and, the picture looks like a portrait of a detached and negative-minded character. The overall composition of the painting, unlike the Basquiat painting, consists of colored planes that overlap and collide with each other, creating a recognizable picture.
The general style of the painting repeats the technique of the supremacists, namely the work of Kazimir Malevich. In his works, he created a non-objective space in which the laws of physics and perspectives do not work. These paintings are unique in that they depict an impossible space, concentration and combinations of colors and shapes that are not burdened with details.
Kazimir Malevich — Composition, 1916
SupremePunk relies on the idea of suprematism, but it also rethinks it, the space in the picture is more voluminous and planned than Malevich's. The planes in the picture are denser and argue more with each other. The general gamut of the painting is red - this is the color of aggression and stubbornness, it characterizes the overall image of the painting. Accents are created using blue and yellow colors, which are needed to refine and create details. The composition of the painting is static and balanced, but chaotically diverging and protruding colored planes create the "ruffiness" of the image, they show hostility and emotional rejection.
Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin — Bathing of a Red horse, 1912
An interesting interpretation for the red color was reproduced in the painting "Bathing of a Red horse" by the Russian artist Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin. It was this painting that brought him worldwide fame. In this picture, the horse has an unusual red color for a reason, it symbolizes the revolution. And the young man running this horse is directly the young organizers of the revolution, into whose hands the management of this obstinate animal has passed. The horse himself is depicted in a rebellious pose, and his eyes depict disobedience and aggressiveness.
The SupremePunk in general mood is similar to the Petrov-Vodkin painting. Both works show an image of confidence and inflexibility, and the red color in both works emphasizes this character and puts an exact emphasis on it.
