Despair
This Punk is inspired by CryptoPunk #7689 and the work of Yves Tanguy, an American artist who worked in France and is one of the most famous representatives of surrealism. Yves Tanguy never studied painting professionally, but once he saw the work of the Italian surrealist Giorgio de Chirico, he left the merchant navy and devoted himself to painting forever. Bold, flamboyant and eccentric, the artist intrigued and shocked the public with both his unorthodox work and his unpredictable behavior.
Yves Tanguy — Tomorrow, 1938
After a trip to North Africa by the artist in the 1930s, objects resembling stones or bones began to appear in his paintings. In Tomorrow, they are set against a bluish-yellow ghostly landscape stretching into infinity. These objects evoke a double sense, being at once soft and hard, real and abstract, moving and frozen in time. The images are immersed in a silvery, pearly light that seems to belong to a completely different world. Thin lines, barely noticeable, characteristic of many of Tanguy's works, indicate a kind of interconnection between the individual objects. SupremePunk draws on the principles of Yves Tanguy's artistic conception. The painting depicts a non-figurative composition that generally forms an interesting and memorable image. The bright background in stains, which resembles a splattered plastered wall and its bright and contrasting elements look like objects frozen in time, motionless and static, like the entire space in general. Unlike Yves Tanguy, there are no overtly surreal images in the painting, but despite this, the painting still evokes a surreal and fuzzy narrative.
The use of contrasting and bright colors creates a kind of screen in the picture, which divides the viewer into many plans, important and independent in their own way.
Yves Tanguy — The Sun in Its Jewel Case, 1937
Yves Tanguy uses similar techniques in his painting The Sun in His Jewelry Box. The painting depicts the artist's favorite sea, where the undulating gray-purple surface of the ocean, turning into a milky mist on the horizon, completely merges with the sky. On the surface of the water, several figures stand in a strange way, one of which resembles a yellow tower, while the others look like a pile of rubble. These figures, which André Breton called "object objects," are quite solid. They have shadows and a certain structure, but exist in a world of their own, with distorted perspective and zero gravity. The strange title of the painting, completely unrelated to its subject matter, was taken by the artist from records in the history of the mentally ill, which he often studied in order to find the most original and outlandish title for his works. In this painting, space is divided by horizontal dark blue stripes that divide it into plans and help the viewer understand the overall structure of the composition. Similarly, SupremePunk is divided by orthogonal, blue planes that create the overall mood of the work.
The combination of colorful, bright planes is also used in his works by Russian street art artist Alyosha. Aliosha is known for his provocative street art objects in Russia, his works always hide behind a lot of symbols and social problems, and his style is recognizable and unique. In his series of works, the street art artist paints a variety of drawings on urns in the city, creating bright and memorable objects in an urban environment. He uses the subjectless language of painting to transform an object.
Alyosha — Trash 4, 2017
His work "Trash 4" is made with the help of intersecting colored planes, which form a complete image of the object. In this case, it is not so much the composition of the planes that matters, but its color saturation and recognizability. SupremPunk repeats these principles. The composition of the work is not the primary task, the main role is played by the color, which forms the first impression and appearance of the picture.
